50 Reasons to Eat & Grow Local Food
Supporting local farmers and producers supports responsible land development and potential land conservation for agricultural uses. In BC we have the Agricultural Land Reserve Act (ALR) that specifies certain areas that are kept on reserve for agricultural use now and in the future. If this land is actually used to grow food, it makes it less likely that current or future governments will use the “use it or lose it” model and open that land up for non-food related development. Other independent bodies and organizations such as our own Malaspina Land Conservancy also allow individual land owners or communities to set legally binding covenants on their land in perpetuity, to reserve its use as a wild area, natural preserve or for food production.
“When you buy from a local farmer/producer at a farmers’ market, you give those with farms and pastures an economic reason to continue farming which helps to support the promotion of a viable and healthy agricultural sector.” Edited from a piece by Jennifer Maiser for www.eatlocalchallenge.com
